Library Media Center

All elementary students from grades K-6 attend classes in the
Library Media Center on a six-day rotation schedule.  The 40-minute classes provide for about 25 minutes of instructional time and 10-15 minutes for book exchange and browsing.

The Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Moses, plans and presents lessons which follow the Oriskany Central School District Curriculum for K-6 Library. This curriculum supports the New York State Learning Standards as well as the American Library Association Information Literacy Standards.

Students in grades K-2 learn the responsibilities of borrowing materials and are introduced to a wide variety of classic and current children's literature. Many lessons include a craft or hands-on activity.

Many of the lessons for 3rd and 4th graders link with topics in their grade level Social Studies curriculum. Students in these classes learn to use the Electronic Catalog to search for their books independently and are introduced to some online databases.  Research skills are directed towards using both print and electronic sources.

The Library Media Specialist and the teachers in 5th and 6th grades collaborate on projects which require the documentation of sources and use of a simple works cited form. The study of various literature genres continues and students are involved in unique and creative projects related to reading.

Computer in Library

The Library Media Center has 8 networked computers available to students at all times. An overhead LCD projector allows for the convenient integration of technology lessons, followed by hands-on practice. The computer Lab is located across the hall and can be scheduled for the entire class when needed. Many new databases are introduced at this level, as well as tips and techniques for conducting research online.
