ESSA replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and began full implementation in the 2018-2019 school year.

Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

The U.S. Department of Education approved New York’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan in January 2018. In developing the plan, NYSED engaged diverse groups of stakeholders to solicit recommendations on how to craft an ESSA plan that best meets the needs of the state’s students, schools, and communities. The plan emphasizes fostering equity in education for all students and expands measures for school accountability and student success.

District ESSA Programs
To foster equity, the New York State ESSA plan:
- addresses disparities in training for teachers to help them be effective in the classroom;
- provides students more access to rigorous high school coursework;
- makes schools equally welcoming environments for all students;
- increases fiscal transparency in school building spending; and
- uses multiple measures to allow students to demonstrate proficiency in state learning standards.
