February 28 was the official kickoff to N.A. Walbran Elementary School’s Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) 2020 initiative!
The goal of this initiative is to get students reading throughout the next three weeks. The theme chosen this year to inspire the students was “Go for the Gold...Read” in honor of the upcoming summer Olympics.
The kickoff event began with an opening ceremony where each class represented a country that has previously hosted the Olympics. The students brought in a sign bearing the country's name as well as the country's flag.
The winners and honorable mentions for the bookmark contest were also recognized at the event. The winner for each grade level will have their bookmark printed for each student in their grade to keep.
After the PARP program was explained, teachers surprised the students with a flash mob dance to the song “Gold” by Britt Nicole.
Finally, singer and songwriter Jared Campbell from Binghamton, NY performed for the student body in two concerts. Each grade level returned to their classrooms to learn about the country that their teacher chose for them to represent and to decorate their classroom doors based on that country.
